The absolute best beach town for combining beginner surfing and safe swimming is Weligama on the south coast. The main bay in Weligama has a sandy bottom and gentle waves, making it the premier destination for learning to surf in Sri Lanka. Just around the corner from Weligama is Mirissa, which offers a stunning crescent shaped beach perfect for swimming and relaxing. Another great option is Hiriketiya beach, a beautiful horseshoe bay where beginners can surf small waves near the shore while others swim safely.
If you are visiting between May and September, head to Arugam Bay on the east coast instead. It is famous globally for surfing, and it has several points nearby like Baby Point that are excellent for beginners. The beaches there are pristine and great for swimming during those months.
