Can I just show the PDF approval email on my phone at the airport immigration desk.

Technically the immigration system is fully digitized and the officers scan your passport to instantly see your approved ETA in their system. However it is incredibly highly recommended to carry a physical printed copy.

If the airport computer system experiences a temporary glitch or if your phone battery dies after the long flight having that piece of paper guarantees you will not be delayed. Your departing airline might also explicitly demand to see a printed copy before letting you board.
