We rented our own three wheeler for a month. Can we drive it directly into the Anuradhapura Sacred City to visit Ruwanwelisaya, or do we need a special vehicle pass.

You can drive your rental tuk-tuk into the sacred city, but you must park in the designated municipal car parks near the major stupas like Ruwanwelisaya and Sri Maha Bodhi. You do not need a special vehicle pass just to enter the roads, but you must purchase your central cultural fund tourist ticket at the main museum first. Do not drive on the pedestrian paths connecting the ruins.

It is a huge site, so having your own tuk-tuk is a lifesaver in the midday heat. Make sure you leave your shoes inside the tuk-tuk so they do not get stolen at the temple entrances.

If you are visiting on a Poya (full moon) day, the traffic near Ruwanwelisaya is gridlocked with local worshippers. Park far away and walk.

Do not park under the large trees near the ruins. The macaques will climb all over your canvas roof and scratch it, or steal whatever you left in the back seat.

Many people prefer to rent bicycles to explore the ruins because it is quieter, but if you have your own tuk-tuk already, just use it. Just drive very slowly near the pilgrims.
