Friday night after the 4th Kumbal - can we actually buy a beer or is Perahera week already dry

Hostel group wants a Lion after we get out of the crowd. Google still thinks Nikini is "soon" and every blog says Kandy goes dry for the festival. Poya is the 27th right? Is a hotel bar even pouring at 9.30 tonight or did the city quietly shut the taps because the temple is 200 metres away.

Tonight is Friday 21st. Nikini Poya - the islandwide Excise dry day - is Thursday 27 August, same night as Grand Randoli. Tonight is not Poya. Hotel bars and licensed restaurants off the route will pour. The streets around the Maligawa are not a pub crawl: do not walk onto Dalada Veediya with a can. Many route-side places are shut because of the cordon, not because of a dry-day gazette.

We had beer at the hotel last night. Street shops near the lake were shuttered until the blocks came off. Nobody sold us anything on the pavement, which is correct.

Save the "is Kandy dry" panic for the 27th. Tonight the problem is finding a place that is open, not a legal ban.

Men approach tourists near Temple of the Tooth offering to be guides. After the tour, they demand large "donations" or guide fees (5000-10000 LKR).
