Good shore snorkeling spots accessible without renting a boat?
I want to snorkel from the beach. Any decent spots where I don't need a boat or guide?

Some areas around Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna still have accessible reef from shore, though much of the best coral is further out or damaged. Early morning before boats start is usually best. Some small bays south of Weligama or near Hiriketiya have decent shore access with fish and occasional turtles. Always check conditions locally — visibility and safety vary. Many people find that even 'shore' snorkeling benefits from a cheap local guide or boat for the best spots, but there are places you can reach by swimming from the beach.
Early morning shore access noted. Will ask locally for current best spots.
I tried a couple of spots near Hikkaduwa. It was okay but nothing compared to what you see from a boat further out.
