Yes, there are a dozen rental racks right on the sand in Hiriketiya. You can rent a foam board for about 500-1000 LKR per hour. The etiquette is strict: beginners MUST stay in the sandy middle section of the bay. Do not paddle out to the left reef break; you will get in the way of advanced surfers and risk injuring yourself on the shallow coral.

The beginner area gets incredibly crowded by 10 AM. It feels like bumper cars. Go at 6:30 AM if you actually want to practice standing up.

If you are a total beginner, strongly consider Weligama instead. It is a 2km long beach break with way more space to learn safely.
