I read about a proposal to expand the free ETA to forty countries. Does this include travelers from the US and Europe starting now.

The government is in the final stages of approving an expansion from seven to forty countries. This list includes the US, UK, Australia, and many European nations. The goal is to reach five million arrivals by 2029. Currently, the system is being tested to ensure the QR code application process is seamless. Check the official gov.lk immigration site as the formal rollout is expected very soon to capture the summer travel season.

Until the official announcement, you still need to pay the standard fifty dollar fee for most western passports. Do not rely on rumors until the ETA portal reflects the zero fee for your specific country.
