If Ella bus is a rumour and 9.45 Colombo luxury is gone, partner wants to "just go to the station" and buy Saturday's first train now. Aggregator sites disagree on 4.30 versus 5.00 and one of them was last updated 2024. Is the station even a ticket window at 10 or just a dark building.

Do not treat aggregator first-train times as a 22 Aug gazette - they disagree (weekend 4:30 express vs Mon-Sat 5:00 on one 2024 table; other boards list different 5:00s). A 10pm visit is only useful if you can see a lit ticket counter. If it is dark, morning board / railway.lk / the window when it opens. There is no 10pm hill departure you should be chasing after a Kumbal.
Station is down the hill from the lake, still a leftover-crowd walk. Sleep. First daylight train or bus is the move. Do not invent a reservation.
Counter was shut when we tried at ~9.30 another night. Morning queue was real. We bought 3rd and sat.

Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
