I saw photos of dozens of tiny stupas. What is the history of this unique site.

Yes, the Kantharodai ruins are definitively Buddhist. The site features roughly sixty miniature stupas made from coral stone, clustered closely together in a peaceful grove. It is an incredibly unique architectural style not found anywhere else on the island.

The site is historically profound because it proves the strong presence of ancient Buddhism in the northern Jaffna peninsula long before the colonial eras. It is very quiet and rarely visited by large tour groups.
