Latest news on the new free tourist ETA and online visa scams
4 Answers from travellers
Great news! Following the massive outcry over the VFS Global delays and the hidden fees, the government has temporarily reverted to the old, simple ETA website (eta.gov.lk). The new 30-day free ETA for the 40 eligible countries is live. However, the rule is you MUST still apply online before you fly. "Free" does not mean you can just walk in without a visa approval.
I applied this morning as a Canadian citizen. The total at checkout was literally 0 USD and it was approved in 10 minutes. The airport queues are much better now.
Make absolutely sure you are using the dot gov dot lk website. There are dozens of fake websites that look official and will charge you an agency fee of 100 USD. That is the only real scam to worry about right now.
Thank you so much. I will apply on the official government site today to avoid the Visa on Arrival desk entirely.
