I am going to the evening pooja at Nallur Kandaswamy Temple. Afterward, we want to try the famous Rio Ice Cream and then experience a local Palmyrah toddy tavern. How do we do this safely.

Nallur is mesmerizing during the evening pooja. Remember, men must remove their shirts to enter. Rio Ice Cream is literally right down the street, grab their Mega Special for a massive sugar rush. For the toddy taverns, hire a trusted tuk tuk driver to take you to a local Kulla. They are raw, local drinking spots. It is completely safe, but go before 8 PM as they close early.

If the toddy is too strong, mix it with a little Sprite. The locals might laugh at you, but it makes it much easier to drink!

Jaffna does not have a traditional clubbing scene. The toddy taverns are as close as you get to a local party, and it is a wildly authentic experience.

Ask the tavern owner if they have any devilled cuttlefish or spicy fried lagoon crab to eat with the toddy. Best bar snacks on the island.

The toddy fermented from the Palmyrah palm is very strong and slightly sour. Do not drink too much if you are not used to wild fermented alcohol.
