Left the key at reception like they asked. Procession is now between us and the front door. WhatsApp to the hotel is one tick. We can see the porter on the inside of the tape watching the elephants. He cannot come out. We cannot go in. Side alley is also cones. Do we just stand here until police unwind or is there a back gate nobody told us about.

Common on Dalada / lake guesthouses. Do not climb tape. Walk to the inland parallel and phone; if data is dead, send a human around the block to the back lane - most lake houses have a kitchen door on the inland side. If not, you wait with everyone else. The porter watching Perahera instead of the gate is a Friday-night Kandy problem, not a crime.
We tell guests to take the key on procession nights. Too late. Stand where we can see you from the door so when the officer lets a gap open we can pull you in. Wave. Be embarrassing.
Our place opened the restaurant side door onto the back grid after 9. Ask the shop next door; they often know the back way.
