We are booked near Yala this week. Friends sent the Daily Mirror clip from the 17th, elephant wandering the lobby like it was checking in. Cute on a phone. Less cute with a 6-year-old. Do they fence these places. Are we supposed to stay on the balcony.

Park-edge hotels here are in elephant country. Staff know the regulars. The rule for you is boring: do not feed, do not flash, do not walk the unlit path with a banana at 10pm, keep the kid on the inside of you. An elephant in a lobby looks gentle on video and is still a wild animal. Hotels that market the encounter will also tell you to give it room.
We stayed two nights, saw one on the access road, not in the breakfast room. Staff were calmer than we were. I would still not book the ground-floor patio room if the clip has you up at 3am.
Same week as the rain / Block 1 conversation. The animal is why you came. Treat it like the roadside fence elephants - stay in the building, let staff manage it.
