Do NOT walk the dark beaches in Arugam Bay alone at 5 AM. The stray dogs pack up at night and become highly territorial of the beach zones. They can be very aggressive to solo walkers. Wait until there is light and other surfers are walking, or take a tuk-tuk directly to the break if your accommodation is far. Safety first.

If they do bark and approach you, never run. Stand your ground, yell, and pretend to pick up a rock.

Also, do not leave your flip flops on the beach while you surf. The dogs love to chew on them and bury them.
