Weligama is the safest beach for learning because it is sandy and has no reef. Mirissa has a strong current near the rocks so stay in the middle.

Always look for red flags on the beach which mean swimming is prohibited due to dangerous wildlife or currents.

Stays in Midigama are best for experienced surfers who want to avoid the main beach crowds.
