We want to see the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy but hate massive tour groups. What time of day is quietest and do we need to book anything?

Go right at opening (5:30-6:00 AM) or the last puja slot around 6:30-7:00 PM. Mid-morning to afternoon is packed with school groups and tour buses. No booking needed for general entry, but the inner shrine viewing has a small extra ticket.

Early morning sounds perfect with kids. We will aim for the 6am opening.

If you go early, you can also walk around the beautiful Kandy Lake before the heat and crowds build. The temple grounds are much more peaceful at dawn.
