I want to see the famous Sri Dalada Maligawa and witness the sacred relic ceremony. When are the daily puja ceremonies and what should I expect during my visit.

The Temple of the Tooth holds three daily puja ceremonies known as thevawa at five thirty in the morning, nine thirty, and six thirty in the evening. The evening puja is by far the most popular with tourists as the temple becomes beautifully illuminated and traditional drummers perform in the courtyard. Arrive at least thirty minutes early to find a good spot near the inner shrine where the sacred relic is housed.

The entrance fee for foreign visitors is around fifteen hundred rupees which includes access to the museum and the World Buddhism Museum housed within the same complex. Plan to spend at least two hours exploring the entire site. Photography is allowed in most areas but strictly forbidden inside the inner shrine room where the tooth relic is kept.

Dress modestly with shoulders and knees fully covered. White clothing is traditional but any modest attire is acceptable. You must remove your shoes and hats before entering the main temple complex. Free shoe storage is available right at the entrance and a small donation is appreciated by the attendants.
