Our tuktuk driver in Polonnaruwa offered to sneak us into the ruins through a back entrance for half the ticket price Is this legit

Absolutely do NOT do this. It is a major scam that can get you arrested. The Cultural Triangle sites are heavily patrolled by the archaeological police. If they catch you inside the park without a valid ticket purchased from the main museum, you will be hit with a massive fine or face deportation. The driver just pockets your cash and leaves you to deal with the consequences.
