A tuktuk driver quoted us 8000 rupees to drive us around the ancient ruins for a day Is this a scam or the going rate

8000 LKR is an extortionate tourist price. A fair rate for a full-day (6-8 hours) tuk-tuk tour of the Anuradhapura sacred city, including waiting time at all the major stupas, is around 4000 to 5000 LKR maximum. Negotiate this flat rate before you get in, and clarify that it covers the entire day with no hidden extra fees.

Also, do not let them take you to a random spice garden on the way back.

Rent bicycles instead! It costs like 500 rupees a day and riding between the ruins under the trees is beautiful.

Just ask your guesthouse to arrange a driver they trust. They will give you the fair local rate.

We will try to negotiate down to 4500 tomorrow. Thanks for the baseline.
