The exact reason Arugam Bay is a world famous surfing destination is the exact reason it is terrible for scuba diving. The bay features massive constant wave action rolling over a predominantly sandy bottom.

This constant kinetic energy relentlessly churns up the fine sand into the water column creating incredibly poor underwater visibility. For crystal clear diving you must travel to areas completely protected from heavy surf swells like Trincomalee.
