We are touring the star shaped Jaffna Fort this afternoon. Afterward, we want to experience the local northern drinking culture. Where can we find fresh Palmyrah toddy and spicy mutton rolls safely.

The Jaffna Fort is spectacular at sunset. Once you are done, ask your tuk tuk driver to take you to a licensed Palmyrah toddy tavern locally called a Kulla outside the city center. It is an authentic, raw experience. Make sure you buy fresh mutton rolls from a nearby bakery like Mangos or Rolex to bite into while drinking the fermented sap.

Just be careful with toddy if you have a sensitive stomach. It is naturally fermented by airborne wild yeast, so it is quite strong and sour if you drink it late in the day. Always try to get the morning tap.
