The Toddy Taverns (Kallu Thaavaram) in Jaffna are very raw, hyper-local spots. The unwritten rules: Go early (8 AM - 10 AM) for the freshest, safest batch. Bring cash only. Be prepared to drink out of folded palmyra leaves. Importantly, these are heavily male-dominated spaces; while tourists get a pass, women traveling alone might feel uncomfortable. Be respectful, do not take aggressive photos of the locals drinking, and just enjoy the vibe.

Do not dress like you are at a beach club. Wear modest clothing out of respect for the northern culture.

I asked before taking a photo and they actually invited me to sit with them and share some spicy crab.

Some are, but your best bet is asking a local tuk-tuk driver to take you to the best one in his village.
