Late May is perfect timing for the northwest and east. Kalpitiya kitesurfing season runs about May to September with reliable cross-shore wind, so yes it is on. For diving, as the southwest monsoon stirs up the south coast, head to the east: the wrecks and reefs around Trincomalee (Pigeon Island) have the best visibility in these months. The Kalpitiya bar reef is also diveable on calm days. Avoid south-coast diving (Hikkaduwa/Unawatuna) now, the water turns murky and rough with the monsoon swell.

Did my first kite lessons in Kalpitiya, the flat-water lagoon is ideal for learning before you hit the open sea side. Book lessons a few days ahead in season.

Bring or verify your diving certification card and logbook, reputable centres will ask. And do not dive and fly within 24 hours before your flight home.

Legend. Kalpitiya for kite then up to Trinco for the diving. Cheers mate.

Pigeon Island off Nilaveli (Trinco) is a marine national park, great snorkelling and shallow diving with reef sharks and turtles. You need a park ticket and they limit numbers, so go early.
