Some areas around Unawatuna and parts of Hikkaduwa still have accessible snorkeling from shore, though the best coral is often further out. Early morning before boats start is usually best for visibility and fewer people. Always snorkel with a buddy, use a life jacket if you're not a strong swimmer, and be aware of currents. Some small bays have decent fish and occasional turtles from shore. Conditions vary — ask locally about current visibility and safety. Many people find that even 'shore' snorkeling benefits from a cheap local guide or short boat trip for the best spots. Respect marine life and don't touch or stand on coral.

Early morning is best. Some spots around Unawatuna have decent shore access. Always go with a buddy and check local conditions.
