We have only two full days in the northern city of Jaffna. What unique cultural and historical sites should we absolutely prioritize visiting during our short stay.

Your absolute top priority must be the colorful Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil which is the most important Hindu temple in the entire northern province. Visit during the early evening puja ceremony to experience the incredible drumming and rituals. Remember men must remove their shirts before entering the inner sanctum.

Take a day trip to the islands of Nainativu and Delft. Nainativu has the sacred Nagadeepa Buddhist temple and a Hindu kovil side by side. Delft island is famous for its wild ponies, baobab trees, and ancient coral walls. The ferry rides are cheap and very scenic.

Do not miss the historic Jaffna Fort built originally by the Portuguese and later expanded by the Dutch. The massive coral and limestone walls offer beautiful sunset views over the lagoon. Entry is completely free and you can walk along the ramparts at your own leisure.
